What is front-wheel drive vs. rear-wheel drive?

If a vehicle has front-wheel drive (FWD), then the transmission is set up to send power to your front end, making the wheels pull your car forward. The best thing about this design is that it’s cheap, easy, and efficient, which is why you mostly see compact cars, small sedans, and crossover SUVs with FWD. While these cars do get better gas mileage, they may not accelerate as fast as you want.

For faster acceleration and more horsepower, rear-wheel drive is the better option. You see RWD with full-size pickup trucks, SUVs, and sports cars. This is because the transmission sends power to the rear differential, causing the car to push forward. These vehicles are also better suited for poor road conditions, such as icy or snowy streets during winter months.
